Composite Decks
Just starting to think about a deck?
Here's a handy planning questionaire from Trex® to help you get started: Trex Deck Planning Guide
Decking Materials
There are many options available when it comes to deck materials. For our area of the country, the market is dominated by three primary options: Pressure Treated, Hardwood, and Composites.
Here is a brief overview of each of these options:
| Pressure Treated | Hardwood | Composites | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest initial cost | Higher initial cost | Higher initial cost |
| Maintenance | Requires the most maintenance of staining, sanding, etc. | Requires some staining/sealing to retain finish | Long-lasting color and texture |
| Splintering and Cracking | Splinters and cracks easily | Few splinters | Guaranteed not to splinter or split |
| Investment | Good | Better | Best |
All decks, regardless of materials and construction detail, should be inspected yearly (for safety) and cleaned with soap and water yearly (for aesthetics).
Composite Decking Brands
Between these three brands, we can usually find a quality solution to your decking needs. These companies offer solid warranties, have been around for a while, and offer a great value, with a nice selection of options.
