Every year since 1986, the REMODELING Big50 inducts 50 owners of remodeling companies that have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship, and impact in their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising industry standards.
Following a lengthy evaluation and interview process, the editors selected BC&L to join the Big50 class of individuals who exemplify the best of the industry this year, and who have something to offer other remodelers in proven practices.
The Big50 selection process has become increasingly rigorous in recent years, and the result, REMODELING editors believe, is one of the strongest classes to date. “Uniting the 2014 inductees are high standards and a determination to rebound following the recession — taking the opportunity to retool systems and processes— ensuring that they are poised to meet their sales, production, and customer-service goals and continue to thrive,” according to REMODELING.
“We are honored to have been considered for this distinction, and humbled to have made the list” says Matthew Breyer, President of BC&L. “The award recognizes excellence and leadership, and we are privileged to be named to this select group of remodelers.”

Since being featured earlier in 2012, Matt Breyer has a third article in the November 2012 Professional Deck Builder magazine:
Being a trade magazine, the content here is sharing with other deck building professionals, but what you can easily glean from the article is that Matt is always seeking ways to improve the enjoyment you get from your deck with solutions other deck builders are not prepared to offer. Even if you don't understand all the terms used, you can still find Matt's Custom Railings article very inspiring.
Matt Breyer was originally featured not just once, but twice in the July/August 2012 issue of Professional Deck Builder trade magazine:
Although this article is somewhat technical in parts of the content because it is for a trade magazine, you will find it very enlightening, especially if you are planning a deck project and want to be sure you are covering all the important considerations. See Matt's Freestanding Decks article here...

NADRA Pennsylvania Chapter Build Deck for a Soldier
Harrisburg, PA, August 23, 2010
Mike Wolgammuth, his wife Melissa their children Allison and Logan were the recipients of a Deck for a Solider® (D4S) build sponsored by the local Pennsylvania Chapter of NADRA.
Melissa had submitted a D4S application to The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) and to her amazement they were chosen! Mike an E-4 Specialist of the 25 Bravo Co., of the 628th Aviation Brigade located in York, PA was so excited, “this is amazing and now I know what it feels like to receive something I've always wanted,” said the overwhelmed solider. Mike is obviously no stranger to giving as he has been active in the Armed Forces since 2001 giving his time and dedication serving overseas in many key military operations serving to our freedom back here in the USA.
The build took a short amount of time thanks to the volunteer force of key deck building contractors and suppliers involved from the NADRA Pennsylvania Chapter. Spearheading the build was Norm Boel; Knock on Wood Decks of Nazareth, PA along with Mike Beaudry, NADRA Executive VP, Matt Breyer of Breyer Construction, NADRA PA Chapter President, Mike Ebner of Back to Nature Decks, NADRA PA Chapter VP, Bob Lett of Wolf Distribution, NADRA National VP. Decking material donations were made by NADRA Members, Erin Barker of Simpson Strong Tie, John May of Fiberon, John Keller of Sequoia Supply and Erik Flick of Fortress Iron Railing & Fence Systems.
Beaudry said, “Norm was always in touch with me letting me know when he was going to have all the permits in order and so forth, I can't give enough thanks to everyone who is here, it was built so quickly and makes the home look beautiful.” The deck build took approximately three days with a bar be que on the last day to kick off the festivities of the new outdoor living space. With their children laughing, the grill smoking and the conversations ongoing, the Wolgamouth's will now have something to enjoy and reflect on for the rest of the summer and many others to come.
To see pictures of the build, check out the NADRA Blog.
Deck builders and product manufacturer's alike raised concerns at the 2004 Deck Expo over the compatibility of new generation wood treatments and fasteners. As a result, many realized the need for a unified industry voice. NADRA is that voice. The association is now in its fourth year as a 501(c)6 not-for-profit corporation.
About Deck for a Soldier:
NADRA launched its Deck for a Soldier program in 2007 when an inquiry came across the NADRA web site. Sergeant Thomas placed an inquiry to NADRA member, Sawdust, Ltd. of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma through NADRA.org, in anticipation of scheduling a deck build when she returned home. Here, the idea of building a “Deck for a Soldier” was born. This is a community effort that expresses our appreciation for the service and dedication of the men and women of our armed forces.
NADRA Mission Statement:
The mission of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) is to provide a unified source for the professional development, promotion, growth, and sustenance of the Deck and Railing building industry in North America so that members can exceed the expectations of their customers.
NADRA is made up of deck builders, manufacturers, dealers/distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and service providers to the deck and railing industry. By working together we can be one voice for the industry and deliver a clear message to the consumer and the code development bodies. NADRA serves as a trade association with emphasis on safe building practices, and deck safety.
